You earn XP for training well, and XP builds your level. The rules reward quality work, so extra sets past what helps don’t keep paying.
What earns XP
- Finish a workout: 50 XP.
- Log a working set: 5 XP per set, up to a weekly limit for each muscle (more on that below).
- Set a personal record: 50 XP for each record, at any rep range.
- Progressive overload: 10 XP per exercise when your best set beats your best set from the last time you did that exercise. GainGames compares an estimated one-rep max worked out from weight and reps, so a heavier set and a set with more reps can both count.
- Hit an exercise goal: 250 XP when you reach a weight and rep target you set.
- Conditioning and cardio: 2 XP per effort minute, up to 350 effort minutes a week.
- Beat a benchmark: 50 XP when you beat your best on the exact same conditioning block. Your first try sets the baseline, and it pays once a week per block.
- Your week score: when a week ends, it pays its score times 3, plus a medal bonus if you earned one. See What your week score means.
- Getting Started: a one-time bonus when you finish the Getting Started checklist on Home.
Warm-up sets never earn XP. You can see what each workout paid on the WORKOUT COMPLETE screen under XP EARNED.
Why set XP has a limit
Every muscle has a weekly maximum, the most hard sets it can usefully recover from. Once a muscle passes it, more sets for that muscle earn no XP, because extra work there stops helping and starts eating into your recovery. Nothing you already earned is taken away. The limit resets every Monday.
A cardio session also needs to be at least 10 minutes long to earn the 50 XP workout bonus. Its effort minutes count either way.
Levels and tiers
Your level, XP and tier on Profile.
Your level comes from your total XP. Each stretch of levels belongs to a tier:
| Tier | Levels | XP to reach the tier | XP per level in the tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newcomer | 1 to 5 | 0 | 500 |
| Apprentice | 6 to 10 | 2,500 | 1,000 |
| Beef Cake | 11 to 20 | 7,500 | 1,750 |
| Mass Monster | 21 to 30 | 25,000 | 3,000 |
| Titan | 31 to 40 | 55,000 | 4,500 |
| Olympian | 41 to 50 | 100,000 | 7,500 |
| Legend | 51 and up | 175,000 | 10,000 |
So level 2 takes 500 XP, level 7 takes 3,500, and each level after 51 takes another 10,000.
Deleting workouts
If you delete a workout, the XP it earned is taken back. Your level stays where it is, though. You never drop a level you’ve already reached.
