GainGames plans your training in three layers. A routine is one workout. A program puts routines on days. A phase is a stretch of a program with its own schedule. You’ll find all three on the Programming tab, under Programs and Routines.
Routines
Your routines, ready to start.
A routine is a reusable workout: the exercises, their target sets and reps, and any blocks like supersets or AMRAPs. You build one once and start it whenever you like with Start Workout on its card.
Routines can also hold progression rules, so the targets move up as you get stronger. See How progression rules work.
Programs
A program is a schedule of routines. Each day in its cycle is either a routine or a Rest Day. A 3-day Full Body program might run Full Body A, rest, Full Body B, rest, Full Body C, rest, rest.
Only one program can be active at a time. When one is, the TODAY card on Home shows what’s up next.
Today’s workout is the next one in your program that you haven’t done this round. Your planned days still set your week’s target, but missing a day never skips a workout. It waits for you. If you know you can’t train, Move to tomorrow turns today into a rest day and moves your training days one day later. To change which weekday the cycle starts on, use Start days on the program.
Phases
A phase is a block of training inside a program, with its own workouts. For example, three rounds of strength work, then three rounds of hypertrophy. Every program has at least one phase. Starter programs start with one called Phase 1.
Each phase has a length:
- Rounds: a round is every workout in the phase done once. Set 3 rounds and you do each workout 3 times. When you’ve done them all, the next phase starts by itself.
- Open-ended: the phase keeps going until you move to the next one yourself.
On an active program you can tap Move to next phase whenever you want to move on early. Your count starts fresh in the new phase, and every workout you’ve done stays in your history.
Tap Add phase to add one, and Edit on a phase to rename it, change its length or move it earlier or later. The current phase is marked NOW.
When you finish the last phase, you stay on it, and Home asks if you want to Repeat it or Pick another.
Why it works this way
A missed day shouldn’t throw your plan out of order. Because GainGames counts the workouts you’ve done rather than the days that have passed, your program picks up where you left off.
